Waking up with itchy, red bumps is an immediate cause for concern. If you suspect you have pests in your home, your mind likely jumps to two notorious culprits: fleas and bed bugs.

Because both of these tiny insects feed on blood and leave itchy welts behind, it is incredibly easy to mistake one for the other. However, eliminating them requires entirely different strategies, treatment products, and preparation steps.

The Bite Test:

Location and Patterns

One of the fastest ways to figure out what is biting you is to look at where the bites are located and how they are grouped.

Flea Bites: Fleas are ground-dwellers that typically hitch a ride on pets or jump up from carpets and grass. Because of this, flea bites are almost always concentrated on your lower legs, ankles, and feet. The bites usually appear as small, red spots with a tiny puncture point in the center, and they are often clustered together randomly.

Bed Bug Bites: Bed bugs are nocturnal travelers that crawl onto you while you sleep. They target exposed skin on your upper body, including your arms, shoulders, neck, and face. Bed bug bites often look like raised, puffy welts (similar to a mosquito bite) and characteristically appear in a tight, linear row of three or four punctures—often referred to by pest pros as “breakfast, lunch, and dinner.”

Physical Appearance and Movement

If you manage to catch a glimpse of the insect itself, their shapes and movements are completely unique.

Fleas: They are flattened vertically (narrow from side to side), allowing them to navigate through pet fur. They are dark reddish-brown to black. Most importantly, they jump. Fleas do not crawl long distances; they use powerful hind legs to leap up to 150 times their body length.

Bed Bugs: They are flattened horizontally (flat from top to bottom), shaped like an apple seed. They are mahogany brown, but turn bright red and elongated after a blood meal. Bed bugs do not have wings and cannot jump or fly; they move at a steady crawling pace.

The Evidence Test:

What Signs Are They Leaving Behind? Pests are experts at hiding, but they always leave clues behind in their favorite environments.

Signs of Fleas:

• Flea Dirt: Look for tiny black specks that resemble coarse black pepper in your pet’s fur, pet bedding, or carpets. Tip: Place these specks on a wet paper towel. If they dissolve and turn red, it is flea dirt (excreted blood).

• Restless Pets: If your dogs or cats are constantly scratching, biting at their tails, or grooming excessively, fleas are the highly likely culprit.

Signs of Bed Bugs:

• Mattress Stains: Check the seams, tufts, and corners of your mattress and box spring. Bed bugs leave behind tiny, dark rust-colored stains (fecal spots) or small blood spots on sheets.

• Shed Skins: As bed bug nymphs grow, they molt and leave behind translucent, hollow skins that match the shape of their bodies.
