Rainy Day Pest Control Tips from the Experts at Versa-Tech Pest Management
Watch as Versa-Tech Pest Management Founder / CEO Jason Baacke explains why we pivot our service during SoCal rainstorms to keep your family and the environment safe.
Why We Don’t “Just Spray” in the Rain
With the heavy rain hitting the Southern California this week, many of our clients ask: “Are you still coming out today? Can you even do pest control in the rain?”
The short answer is yes, but the way we do it changes entirely.
In California, we have some of the strictest environmental laws in the country—and for good reason. At Versa-Tech, we don’t just “check a box” and spray your exterior walls while it’s pouring. Doing so is not only a waste of your money, but it’s often a violation of state regulations.
1. The “Runoff” Reality (California DPR Laws)
The California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) is very clear: Most liquid pesticides cannot be applied to outdoor surfaces during a rain event or when standing water is present. When a company power-sprays your home’s perimeter in a downpour, those chemicals don’t stay on your house. They wash into the storm drains, eventually reaching our local groundwater and the ocean. If your current provider is spraying your eaves or foundation while it’s raining, they are likely risking a violation and polluting our SGV ecosystem.
2. The “Rainy Day Pivot” – How Versa-Tech Does It Differently
Just because it’s raining doesn’t mean your pest protection stops. In fact, rain often drives pests like ants, cockroaches, and rodents indoors looking for high ground. Instead of an exterior spray, our “Rainy Day Service” focuses on:
Interior Precision: We focus on the “wet zones” (kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms) where pests migrate.
Attic & Crawlspace Inspections: We look for the entry points that rodents use to escape the cold.
Protected Treatments: We use specialized gels and “pasted” baits in dry, protected areas (like under sinks or in wall voids) that rain can’t reach.
Threshold Gaps: We check door sweeps and weather stripping—your first line of defense against displaced pests.
3. Granulars: Fact vs. Fiction
You might hear a tech say, “The rain actually helps activate these granules!” While a light mist can help some products, a SoCal downpour will simply float those granules away from your foundation and into your lawn. We only apply granulars when we can ensure they will stay exactly where they are needed to create a protective barrier.
