FACTS ABOUT COMMON HOUSE FLIES & FLYING INSECTS

Controlling and eliminating any type of Southern California fly activity starts with breaking the life cycle. Flies have four life stages egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Addressing each of the four life cycles is key to eliminating fly activity and keeping it controlled. The first step is proper identification of the type or types of flying insect. Next is to locate the breeding source. Something as simple as overwatering indoor plants my cause Fungus Gnat activity, moist exterior mulch beds and shrubs can attract House Flies to something as large as a trash compactor causing Phorid Flies as well as Stable Flies are some sources. Any kind off filth or decaying organic material will breed and attract flies. The best way to break the life cycle is by addressing conducive conditions and interior and exterior sanitation and maintenance issues. Each fly problem is unique, and it is critical each case be properly addressed and evaluated so that the management is correctly applied. Temperature is also a common factor in fly management. In the warmer months of spring and summer, flies will breed continuously as the hotter temperatures will cause the generation time to shorten.

There are many types of control measures and equipment that can control each of the fly’s life stages. Fly Lights are great for consistent indoor attraction and capture of adult flies. They are also a great identification tool. Metered Aerosol dispensers are great for small spaces like dumpster rooms or enclosed trash areas and address flies as they emerge. Fly baits are one of the oldest methods but have their place as a great attractant away from areas and can be sprayed onto a surface for a less visible control method. Flying Insect Fogging treatments work when immediate control and knockdown is needed to indoor areas. Fly Traps come in a multitude of types and methods of attraction. Fly traps are good almost anywhere both indoor and outdoor and are great way to attract flies away from an area. Water Based Residual treatments are great for continual control that can be applied to many different areas both indoor and out. They also offer immediate knock down and breeding control. Residuals can also be applied to potted plants or more targeted surfaces like around doors and windows and wall areas.

Mechanical controls are often the best form for indoor control. Properly fitting and sealed doors as well as Air Curtains that push the air out keep flies from entering a structure and populating. Good air conditioning and temperature control is one of the first ways to control fly breeding inside. This especially true for most filth flies. A temperature below 72 degrees is ideal.
